Netflix revives the Stanford prison experiment as reality TV, and six participants reportedly quit
Netflix is about to turn one of psychology's most controversial experiments into reality television. In The New Stanford Prison Experiment, thirty volunteers are assigned to guard and prisoner roles inside a decommissioned section of an operating American prison. Two days before the six-episode series premieres, Variety reports that six participants left the production and that filming involved several periods of intense emotional pressure. Producers insist that they introduced protections absent from the original 1971 study. Yet the central question remains: can television turn a historically discredited experiment into entertainment without reproducing some of the problems that made it notorious?
