Night City no longer exists exclusively for people playing Cyberpunk 2077. It also belongs to an audience introduced to the setting through Japanese animation.
The new ten-episode Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 series continues that relationship. Its October 20 Netflix premiere is followed by a Cyberpunk 2077 update that brings selected elements of the anime back into the game.
The connection goes beyond decorative references. CD Projekt RED has introduced a side quest specifically set before the events of the new animated story.
A story that takes place before the anime
The Clampdown quest functions as a narrative prequel to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2.
Players unlock it after completing The Heist and two Wakako gigs, followed by an in-game message.
Its rewards include a five-piece equipment set inspired by King, creating a tangible connection between the new animated characters and the playable world.
CD Projekt RED does not describe the quest as a complete adaptation of the Netflix season.
Instead, it provides an additional perspective from an earlier point in the fictional chronology.
Music connects the two experiences
The update also adds HKGN 102.0 FM, a radio station featuring music from the Edgerunners series.
Music has always played an important part in Cyberpunk's identity. It accompanies the atmosphere of Night City while helping connect specific moments with characters and emotions.
Moving that music into an in-game radio station gives players a way to experience part of the anime's atmosphere during their own journeys.
Unlike a conventional soundtrack album, the music becomes part of the world as players explore it.
Night City remains the central character
Update 2.5 also introduces Welcome to Paradise, a guided city tour narrated by Richard Night.
Twelve additional Minor Arcana tarot cards encourage players to discover new details around the environment.
These additions reinforce Night City's role as more than a background setting.
Its streets, landmarks and histories create continuity between different Cyberpunk stories, allowing audiences to recognize the same fictional space even when the protagonists change.
The franchise has moved beyond its original release
Cyberpunk 2077 had a difficult launch in December 2020, especially on older consoles.
Subsequent updates, changes to major systems and the Phantom Liberty expansion substantially altered the experience.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners introduced the setting to another audience, including viewers who had not played the RPG.
The second anime season and the accompanying game update continue that strategy of telling complementary stories within the same universe.
Their existence does not establish how many viewers will become players or how much the releases will affect sales.
Character customization reinforces the setting's themes
The update also expands visual customization through five Glamdocs specializing in hand cyberware.
Players can change the appearance of Mantis Blades, Gorilla Arms and other implants, selecting new designs and colors.
Within Cyberpunk's fiction, bodily modification serves as a form of personal expression as well as a practical technological choice.
New clothing collections and Photo Mode options reinforce that relationship between appearance and identity.
One city, multiple forms of storytelling
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 has been available on Netflix since October 20. Cyberpunk 2077's free Update 2.5 is scheduled for October 22 on its initial platforms, with other versions following later.
The update is not a substitute for watching the new animated series. It adds a prequel story and related elements to an already established game world.
The broader result is a shared setting that continues to support different characters, viewpoints and storytelling formats without depending on a single protagonist.
