Godzilla Minus One Review: The Monster Is Terrifying, but the Human Scars Cut Deeper

By Clarel

9/10 — Godzilla Minus One is one of the franchise's finest films and a remarkable demonstration of what a blockbuster can achieve when human experience remains central to the spectacle. Takashi Yamazaki restores the nuclear and tragic power of the 1954 original while creating a moving drama about survivor's guilt. Ryunosuke Kamiki delivers a compelling performance, Godzilla is genuinely frightening, and the Oscar-winning visual effects support exceptionally clear action filmmaking. Heavy-handed dialogue, convenient storytelling and less developed female characters prevent perfection. Yet Godzilla has rarely felt so dangerous, and the franchise's human drama has seldom mattered so much.

PROS

A remarkable return to Godzilla's historical, nuclear and tragic foundations.
Ryunosuke Kamiki convincingly portrays a man consumed by survivor's guilt.
A compelling human story that stands on its own between monster appearances.

CONS

Occasionally heavy-handed melodrama and dialogue that overexplains emotions.
Some overly convenient plot developments and resolutions.
