Returning to a familiar town can make its changes feel especially personal. A favorite shop has closed, old friends have developed new plans, and the place remembered from childhood no longer quite exists.
June faces that experience in Usual June, although Fen Harbor has additional problems that most college towns never encounter.
Ghosts are disappearing, crystalline monsters are invading the cemetery and an unfamiliar threat is emerging from another world.
Finji originally scheduled the adventure for October 28, 2026. It has since moved the release to January 20, 2027, taking the game out of the Halloween season.
The ghosts remember what the living cannot
Usual June combines supernatural investigation with a story about changing relationships and the passage of time.
The developer describes a town where familiar places are closing or moving away, while June and her friends struggle to decide what their futures should look like.
The supernatural gives that situation another dimension. Ghosts possess memories of past events, while living characters can physically interact with the world around them.
Investigating Fen Harbor requires bringing those different forms of knowledge together.
Finji has described a cast of approximately 25 characters, with conversations and relationships contributing to the mystery.
The idea of memory is particularly relevant here. The dead can preserve knowledge of places and events that the living may have forgotten, while June must decide what to do with those discoveries.
A supernatural adventure about ordinary concerns
June is a college student whose original plans involve spending time with friends and dealing with everyday responsibilities.
Those ordinary concerns continue to exist even as the story introduces monsters, strange dimensions and a threat to the entire city.
Finji presents this contrast through stylized environments and expressive characters, alternating between familiar urban spaces and more surreal locations.
Secret laboratories, haunted observatories, abandoned train stations and buried tunnels extend the mystery beyond the visible streets of Fen Harbor.
The game also incorporates humor and friendship into its presentation. The supernatural crisis does not entirely displace the characters' personal relationships.
Action as another form of expression
The combat system has been designed to support both approachable controls and more demanding combinations.
Creative director Adam Saltsman has explained that players can begin with simple melee attacks and dodges before experimenting with parries, super moves, weapon changes and special abilities.
As June progresses, new projectiles, traps, defenses and summons become available.
The emphasis on flexible combinations mirrors the game's broader interest in experimentation. Different abilities can be combined rather than forcing players into one rigid approach.
The final balance and variety of encounters remain to be evaluated after release.
A creative team with a narrative background
Adam Saltsman leads Usual June as creative director, working with contributors including writers David Pinckney and Cara Ellison and audio director Adam Hay.
Finji has developed games including Overland and Canabalt and published titles such as TUNIC, Night in the Woods and I Was a Teenage Exocolonist.
Those connections help explain the studio's interest in combining accessible play with strong characters and a distinctive fictional setting.
A free demo is available on Steam, offering an early opportunity to explore the game and experience its combat.
The full release is planned for Windows PC and Mac on January 20, 2027. Console versions and French localisation have not been officially confirmed.
