Project Hail Mary Review: Ryan Gosling and Rocky Bring Wonder Back to Science Fiction

By Clarel

8/10 — Project Hail Mary is a generous, visually impressive and genuinely lovable space adventure. Ryan Gosling delivers one of his most engaging performances, while Rocky nearly steals the movie through a relationship that provides its emotional identity. Science becomes an exciting source of entertainment, and cooperation between different species offers a refreshing alternative to conflict-driven science fiction. Excessive length, narrative shortcuts and an overextended conclusion prevent it from reaching the genre's highest standards. Nevertheless, this is an intelligent and moving blockbuster whose characters prove more memorable than its spectacle.

PROS

Ryan Gosling delivers an expressive performance balancing humor, vulnerability and genuine emotion.
Grace and Rocky's friendship is an extraordinary achievement in storytelling and characterization.
Scientific problem-solving becomes accessible, entertaining cinematic adventure.

CONS

The 156-minute running time becomes particularly noticeable in the final act.
Several emotional conclusions overemphasize feelings already communicated effectively.
Our rating 8 / 10
