Taika Waititi puts his Star Wars movie on ice after six years in development
Six years after Lucasfilm announced Taika Waititi as the director of a new Star Wars feature, the project still has no confirmed production schedule or release date. Now the filmmaker has acknowledged that the movie has been placed on hold. Speaking to Inverse in an interview published on October 19, 2026, Waititi revealed that he and screenwriter Tony McNamara are working on something different. He did not entirely rule out revisiting Star Wars someday, but the project is clearly no longer among his immediate priorities. For Lucasfilm, the development offers another reminder that announcing a celebrated filmmaker is not the same thing as getting a movie into theaters.
